What is Topamax?

Topamax (topiramate) is a seizure medication, also called an anticonvulsant.

Topamax is used alone to treat seizures in adults and children who are at least 10 years old.

Topamax is used in combination with other medications to treat seizures in adults and children who are at least 2 years old.

Topamax is also used to prevent migraine headaches in adults. It will only prevent migraine headaches or reduce the number of attacks. It will not treat a headache that has already begun.

The Chicago Dental Society just released the results of a survey of 300 of their members with some extremely interesting findings including;

* Almost 70% of dentists had a patient who tried to self-treat themselves before visiting the dentist. Among these self-treatments were using Super Glue to repair broken crowns or dentures and filing chipped teeth with an emery board. Several dentists also reported treating patients after they attempted to give themselves a root canal with a power tool

* Dental Myth #1 among the majority of dentists surveyed is that root canals are painful. Those dentists surveyed feel that advancements in dental technology have made this comment in dental procedure almost pain-free nowadays

Soundwaves May Detect Early Dental Decay

ABC news is reporting that sound waves could soon be used to identify the early stages of tooth decay, a process that often relies on the use of painful and damaging probes according to Australian PhD researcher, David Hsiao-Chuan Wang from the University of Sydney in Australia. Dr. Wang and his colleagues reported their findings in the most recent issue of the Journal Optics Express.

Tooth decay begins by acid-forming bacteria eating away at the enamel, causing minerals to leach from it, softening and weakening the tooth. Dentists sometimes identify this demineralisation by seeing a change in the colour of the tooth, or by looking at x-rays while other times, they use sharp probes that test the hardness of the enamel and find where the rot has set in. Unfortunately these probes can be painful and cause unnecessary damage to the teeth.
