Smoking During Pregnancy and How it can Damage Your Child

Smoking during pregnancy puts your baby at great risk for many health problems. There are a number of problems including but not limited to adverse risks during and after pregnancy. Many women will not heed our advice to quit immediately upon discovering they are pregnant which is unfortunate. But you and your baby will both benefit tremendously if you can manage to quit at any time while you are pregnant. The hundreds of chemicals added to cigarettes attack all the system of the mother and unborn child. Your baby will be more susceptible to colds and infections if you smoke because it compromises their immune system. The child may also have growth problems as a result of smoking as well. The lung functions of a child whose mother smoked while pregnant can be seriously compromised. Bronchitis and other chronic respiratory symptoms are also more common for these children. Also consider that these problems also involve the child's immune system, as well. These creates a greater susceptibility to infections.


There are negative effects on the unborn child when you smoke and are pregnant. There are many culprits, but cigarette smoking is the main one.


Blood vessels constrict when nicotine is present in the blood. There is less oxygen in the blood due to reduced blood flow. But the decreased blood oxygen serves to compromise the baby's brain as well as cardiovascular system.


You can eliminate the common problems associated with smoking during pregnancy if you take action to quit smoking. This situation is pretty black and white. If you need additional motivation then you should do more reading and learn more about all that can possibly happen to your baby. Still births and a higher risk of SIDS are some of the most serious risks. Smoking during pregnancy is extremely harmful for your baby.
